Punjab’s Khanna youth among 12 died in Georgia due to suspected gas leak

Ludhiana: A 26-year-old Sameer Kumar from Khanna was among the 12 people, including 11 Indians, who died of carbon monoxide poisoning at a restaurant “Haveli” in Gudauri, Georgia.

According to Sameer’s brother Gurdeep Kumar, it was Sameer’s birthday on December 14 when the tragic incident occurred.

Gurdeep shared that they last talked to Sameer during the intervening hours of December 13 and 14 to wish him on his birthday and then during the entire day on December 14 they were not able to contact Sameer. Then on December 15, when they managed to get the contact number of the restaurant and talked to the restaurant manager who informed them that there was a heavy snowstorm last night which led to power outage following which a power generator was switched on. “We are being told that a gas was produced from the generator and as the doors of the room were closed due to the storm, all the 12 victims died in their sleep,” he said.

He added that they are making efforts to seek assistance from local administration and embassy officials in Delhi to bring Sameer’s body back home for last rites.

According to Sameer’s family members, Sameer had shifted to Georgia around five months ago to work in a restaurant.

Sameer leaves behind his parents, a brother, and a married sister.
