Kolkata (West Bengal): Bharatiya Janata Party leader Roopa Ganguly was arrested on Thursday and taken to Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar after participating in a peaceful dharna at the Bansdroni Police Station. Her protest was in response to the tragic death of a schoolboy who was struck by an excavator in Kolkata’s Bansdroni area.
The incident occurred when the 14-year-old boy was on his way to a tuition class. Ganguly claimed that those responsible for the incident were associates of the local Trinamool Congress (TMC) counselor for the 113th ward. She stated to ANI, “A tragic event took place early on Mahalaya when a payloader ran over a young student, and the original driver wasn’t behind the wheel; it was a training session. Locals alleged that the four boys involved were intoxicated and have connections to the local TMC counselor.”
She expressed her frustration, noting, “Despite my efforts throughout the day to urge the police to apprehend the culprits, I was instead arrested and taken to Lalbazar for no apparent reason. I don’t understand why they are not quick to arrest the actual offenders while harassing ordinary citizens.” Further information regarding the boy’s death is still awaited.
