Ten injured as bus hits truck in Tamil Nadu

Ten people sustained injuries when a Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation (TNSRTC) bus collided with a truck loaded with iron rods on the Chennai-Tiruchi highway in Chengalpattu district on Thursday.

According to police reports, the bus, which was en route to Virudachalam, struck the truck from behind. The impact caused significant damage to the front of the bus, but both the driver and conductor were successfully rescued from the wreckage.

All injured passengers have been taken to a local government hospital for treatment. The Chengalpattu police have initiated an investigation and registered a case following the incident.

This accident comes shortly after another tragic event on the same highway earlier this week. On Monday, a female Sub-Inspector and Head Constable lost their lives when a speeding car collided with their two-wheeler. The victims, 36-year-old Sub-Inspector Jayashree and Head Constable Nithya, both serving at Madhavaram Police Station, were on duty and heading to apprehend a suspect when their bike was hit near Sirunagalur.

While traveling near Maduranthakam, a car that was trying to overtake them crashed into their motorcycle from behind, throwing both officers onto the road. Additionally, on October 31, S. Krishnaveni, a Special Sub-Inspector with the Tamil Nadu police, was also involved in a collision with a speeding motorcycle.

P. Balachandran, a social activist and Senior Councillor at the Centre for Policy and Development Studies, a Chennai-based think tank, remarked, “We have been holding seminars and awareness programs throughout Tamil Nadu to promote road safety. Nevertheless, accidents continue to occur frequently in the state. Overspeeding and reckless driving remain significant contributors to these tragedies.”
