Bihar: HC cancels 65% reservation, setback for Nitish government

Patna: The state government’s decision to increase the scope of reservation in Bihar has gotten a jolt from the High Court. The High Court has cancelled the state government’s decision to increase the scope of reservations from 50 percent to 65 percent.

The Chief Justice of Patna High Court’s bench gave this verdict while hearing the petitions challenging the state government’s decision to give 65 percent reservation to SC, ST, EBC, and other backward classes in educational institutions and government jobs. The court ordered the cancellation of the law brought by the state government. The decision was reserved on March 11 after completing the hearing on the petitions filed by petitioner Gaurav Kumar and others, on which the Patna High Court gave its verdict today.

The Bihar government had placed the economic and educational data of the state on the table of the assembly at the end of last year. The government also told how much share each class has in the government jobs of the state. The general category population in Bihar is 15 percent, and the maximum number of people holding government jobs is 6 lakh 41 thousand 281.

The backward class, with 63 percent of the of the population, is in second place in terms of jobs. The backward class has a total of 6 lakh, 21 thousand, and 481 jobs.

The scheduled caste with 19 percent population is in third place. The SC category has 2 lakh, 91 thousand, and 4 jobs. The scheduled tribe population is the lowest, with more than one percent of the of the population.
