Imphal: Two elderly men were shot in the legs by unidentified assailants in Imphal East district on Tuesday night.
According to the police, the attack occurred at the Kongba river bank under the jurisdiction of Heingang police station, where the gunmen approached the men, Takhelchangbam Hemanta (55) and Yengkhom Kesho (56), and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Local witnesses quickly rushed to assist the injured, who were then taken to the Imphal East District Police for medical care. Both men were subsequently transported to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal for treatment.
Authorities are investigating the incident and have not yet identified the attackers or their motives. Heingang Police Station has initiated a search operation in the area to gather information and locate those responsible for this violent act.
This attack follows the recent shooting of two migrant workers from Bihar, which occurred on Saturday. In relation to that incident, police have arrested eight individuals linked to the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) (KCP-PWG) and recovered a number of weapons.
The migrant workers, Sunalal Kumar (18) and Dasharat Kumar (17), were killed near a panchayat office in Kakching district while cycling. In response to their deaths, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the violence and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh for each victim’s family. He also indicated that the case may be transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a thorough investigation if necessary.
