Kolkata: Two young men died after their motorcycle crashed into a guardrail on a flyover in Kolkata on Sunday morning. The victims were identified as Anish Rana (19) and Danish Alam (18), both residents of the Bowbazar area.
According to eyewitnesses, Alam was riding the motorcycle at high speed on the Maa Flyover, an area known for frequent accidents. It was reported that neither of them was wearing helmets when their motorcycle collided with a guardrail at a curve on the flyover. The force of the impact caused them to fall from the flyover, leading to severe head injuries.
Locals immediately alerted the police, and the injured were rushed to S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, where they were pronounced dead.
City police revealed that they often conduct awareness campaigns about safe driving practices, especially for motorcyclists using the Maa Flyover. They emphasized the importance of wearing helmets and refraining from speeding. An official from the Traffic Department stated that if the motorcycle’s speed had been within safe limits, the accident might have been avoided. Additionally, he noted that the lack of helmets likely contributed to their fatalities.
The police have also noted another contributor to motorcycle accidents in the area: motorcyclists often get caught in stray kite strings. As a preventive measure, they have erected a wire fence four feet high above the flyover’s guard walls.
