Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviews security situation at Pahalgam terror site as NIA joins probe

Pahalgam: In the wake of the tragic terror attack that took many innocent lives on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation at the Baisaran meadow attack site in Pahalgam on Wednesday.

Arriving by helicopter, Shah conducted an aerial survey of the region before landing at the site, which now bears the marks of violence. He toured the area under tight security and received briefings from top officials regarding the current circumstances and ongoing operations in the vicinity.

This visit comes amid heightened security alerts across the Kashmir Valley following the attack, which specifically targeted tourists in one of the region’s main travel destinations. The incident is regarded as one of the most severe attacks in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, and the government has yet to release an official casualty count.

Prior to his visit to Pahalgam, Amit Shah paid tribute to the victims in a heartfelt ceremony and met with their families outside the Police Control Room in Srinagar. Taking to X, he reiterated the government’s strong commitment to fighting terrorism, emphasizing that “Bharat will not bend to terror.”

“With a heavy heart, I paid my last respects to the deceased of the Pahalgam terror attack. Bharat will not bend to terror. The perpetrators of this heinous attack will not be spared,” stated Shah.

Meanwhile, a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also arrived at the attack site to assist the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the investigation, which is deemed the deadliest assault on civilians in the region in nearly two decades.

The NIA team, led by an officer of Deputy Inspector General rank, visited Baisaran just a day after terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in the scenic meadow located about five kilometers from Pahalgam town in Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Official sources informed ANI that the NIA team members will support the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the ongoing investigation.

The NIA’s cooperation with the J-K Police is crucial, as the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba’s proxy, the Resistance Front (TRF), has claimed responsibility for the attack. The NIA team is expected to conduct a thorough examination of the site, gather forensic evidence, and assist in identifying those responsible for this tragic incident.
