UP power dept raids SP MP's residence, evidence of meter tampering found

Uttar Pradesh: The Uttar Pradesh Power Department conducted a raid on Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rahman Burk’s house in Sambhal on December 19 amid suspicions of electricity meter tampering. During the raid, officials discovered evidence of irregularities in two electricity meters, including records showing zero consumption over the past year, despite the presence of air conditioners.

Power Department official Santosh Kumar Tripathi commented that the findings were significant but could not provide further details until further analysis is completed. Advocate Kasim Jamal, who represents Burk, stated that the inspection revealed two air conditioners, several ceiling fans, lights, and a refrigerator. He noted that the family pays minimum electricity charges according to the department’s assessment and mentioned that the house is equipped with solar panels, with only four family members living there since the MP’s sisters have moved out.

Sambhal ASP Shri Chandra added that the Power Department had requested security for the inspection, and they ensured the process went smoothly. Previously, old meters at Burk’s residence had been replaced, sealed, and sent for lab examination, as the existing 4-kilowatt meter was considered inadequate for the property, which spans 200 square yards. A team of 5-6 Power Department employees was accompanied by armed security personnel and tear gas to manage any potential disturbances during the operation.
