Uttarakhand CM reviews cybersecurity of infrastructure after cyberattack on data center

Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami convened a meeting on Saturday with various officials to evaluate the situation concerning a malware incident that temporarily shut down the state’s data center. He instructed the officials to expedite the scanning process of the State Data Centre and prioritize the restoration of websites related to public services, aiming for full operation by Monday.

The meeting included experts, representatives from the police department, and senior officials from the State Data Center, State Wide Area Network (SWAN), National Informatics Centre (NIC), and Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA) at the Chief Minister’s residence.

Dhami emphasized that such incidents should not occur again and called for the establishment of a cyber security task force in the state to safeguard online services. He proposed enhancing the security framework of the State Data Centre with assistance from top IT agencies in India, conducting a safety audit of the State Data Centre and online platforms within the designated timeline.

The Chief Minister also directed the creation of a disaster recovery centre to ensure the security of online platforms and the recovery of online data across various departments. He recommended studying and implementing successful cyber security practices from other states and central ministries.

Furthermore, Dhami ordered a review of the performance of the company handling technical work in ITDA. If any negligence is detected, appropriate action should be taken. He urged to expedite the filling of all relevant posts by organizing a meeting led by the Chief Secretary to assess personnel deployment needs within ITDA. He also highlighted the importance of providing cyber security training for employees and officials, ensuring that an up-to-date anti-virus system is operational in all government offices to prevent future incidents.

According to Secretary Nitesh Jha, there was no data loss due to the malware affecting virtual machines at the ITDA data centre, with only 11 out of 1378 machines being impacted. Over the past two days, the data centre has undergone multiple scans, and other websites, including e-office and the CM helpline Suchaaru, have resumed operations. Chief Secretary Radha Raturi attended the meeting virtually, alongside various senior officials including Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar, Principal Secretary R.K. Sudhanshu, and others.
