Violent Clash During Panchayat Election Nominations, AAP Leader Shot, Condition Critical

A clash broke out between the workers of the Aam Aadmi Party and the Shiromani Akali Dal in Jalalabad, Fazilka district of Punjab. The incident occurred at the Block Development and Panchayat Office (BDPO). Gunfire was exchanged during the altercation, resulting in injuries to two Aam Aadmi Party workers, with one reported to be in critical condition.

According to the police, the clash happened when Shiromani Akali Dal leader Vardev Singh Noni Mann and his associates arrived at the BDPO office. Aam Aadmi Party workers were already present there. A relative of Mann is contesting in the rural body elections. Sources claim that Mann’s camp was worried that the nomination papers of their candidates might be rejected following a complaint from AAP-supported sarpanch candidate Mandeep Barar, who is contesting from Muhammadwala village. Noni Mann’s camp has faced allegations of illegally occupying land.

When Mandeep had an argument with the Man group, the dispute turned violent. During this, shots were fired. Mandeep was shot in the chest and was immediately referred to DMC in Ludhiana for better treatment. Another injured activist was shot in the hand and has been referred to a hospital in Faridkot. Their identity has not yet been established.

Fazilka’s SSP Varinder Singh Barar, who visited the crime scene, stated that the accused had a longstanding rivalry with Mandeep. Mandeep had filed a complaint against his opponents regarding illegal occupation of panchayat land for a private school in his native village, Chak Suhela Wala. Following the complaint, the no-objection certificate issued by the state government for the said school was also revoked. A lawsuit has been filed in this matter as well. The police have said that the process of filing a case against the accused is underway. The SSP assured a thorough investigation into the matter.
