Los Angeles: The National Basketball Association is set to take a major step toward expansion, with team owners expected to vote next week on whether the league should move forward with plans to add two new franchises.
Eye on Las Vegas and Seattle
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has previously indicated that the league is considering markets like Las Vegas and Seattle. If the proposal passes, the goal is to add both teams for the 2028-29 season.
Owners’ Approval Required
The proposal will be presented at the Board of Governors meeting on March 24–25. Approval from at least 23 of the league’s 30 owners is required. After the initial vote, the franchise awarding process will begin, with bids expected to range from $7 billion to $10 billion.
Expansion will increase opportunities
The addition of two new teams will increase the league from 30 to 32 teams. This will create numerous opportunities for new players, coaching staff, and management. It could also potentially lead to the NBA’s return to a city like Seattle, where fans have been waiting since the team moved there in 2008.
