Mumbai: The National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has issued a warning to Maratha quota agitators in Mumbai after receiving complaints about alleged harassment of women journalists during the ongoing protests.
Complaint from Journalists’ Association
Rahatkar acted upon a complaint filed by the TV Journalists Association, Mumbai, which alleged that female reporters covering the demonstrations were being physically and verbally harassed by protesters. The incidents reportedly involved pushing, pulling of clothes, snatching of boom microphones, and making objectionable remarks.
NCW Chairperson’s Stand
The NCW chief emphasised that while the right to peaceful protest is guaranteed, it should not be exploited to cause harm or mental distress to others, especially those performing their professional duties. She highlighted that journalists and cameramen have been working tirelessly in adverse weather conditions to report on the agitation.
Call for Restraint and Respect
Rahatkar supported the advice given by protest leader Manoj Jarange-Patil, who urged agitators to maintain discipline. She reiterated the need for protesters to respect women journalists and other media professionals.
Legal and Administrative Actions
In parallel developments, the Bombay High Court criticised the Maharashtra government for failing to remove around 5,000 vehicles linked to the protesters that were causing major traffic disruptions in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Mumbai Police issued a notice to Jarange-Patil instructing him to vacate Azad Maidan, citing repeated violations by his supporters which led to the withdrawal of protest permissions.
