₹29-Crore ‘Neuron 2.0’ Technology Incubation Centre to Come Up in Mohali

The Punjab government has taken a significant step towards establishing Punjab as a leading hub for technology-driven entrepreneurship. The state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Software Technology Parks of India (STPI). Under the agreement, the ‘Startup Punjab Hub Neuron 2.0’ will be established at the STPI campus in Mohali.

The modern technology incubation centre, being developed at an estimated cost of ₹29 crore, will particularly focus on promoting startups working in cybersecurity and next-generation technologies.

Platform to Strengthen Punjab’s Startup Ecosystem

The MoU was signed at Udyog Bhawan by the Punjab Department of Industries and Commerce. The agreement was signed by the Director of the Department of Industries and Commerce and Punjab Startup Nodal Officer, along with the Director of STPI. The department said Neuron 2.0 will build on the success of the already operational Neuron 1.0 initiative.

Neuron 1.0 Supported 114 Startups

Neuron 2.0 is set to expand Punjab’s start-up ecosystem, drawing on the achievements of its predecessor, Neuron 1.0. The earlier programme helped establish 114 start-ups, develop 158 products and 171 prototypes, and generate nearly 2,700 employment opportunities. These ventures collectively secured investments worth about ₹251 crore and reached an estimated valuation of ₹2,890 crore. For the new initiative the Punjab government has proposed ₹12 crore in initial support, while STPI will provide ₹17 crore. Over five years, the centre plans to support 50 start-ups and train 2,000 technology professionals.

Cybersecurity to Be a Key Focus of Neuron 2.0

Unlike the existing technology areas, cybersecurity will be added as a major domain under Neuron 2.0. A dedicated cybersecurity lab will also be established at the centre. Startups will be provided with modern facilities to develop products, conduct technical experiments and test emerging technologies.

Its key technology areas will include artificial intelligence, data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), audiovisual graphics and cybersecurity.

Support from Incubation to Product Commercialisation

The project ‘Neuron 2.0’ is planned not merely as a startup office space but as a comprehensive innovation platform. Startups will receive support in areas such as incubation, mentorship, modern technological infrastructure, skill development, product commercialisation and industry connections.

Under the agreement, STPI will be responsible for operating and managing the centre. It will also maintain the cybersecurity lab and organise various outreach programmes. Hackathons, boot camps and investor-connect programmes will be organised to connect startups with technical talent and potential investors.

Skill Training to Be Offered at Three Levels

Technical training under Neuron 2.0 will be divided into three levels: Foundation, Intermediate and Expert. The objective is to train students and professionals, ranging from basic knowledge of emerging technologies to advanced, expert-level skills.

Government School and College Students to Get Opportunities

The initiative will not be limited to startup founders and technology professionals. Students from government and government-aided schools and colleges will also be connected with training programmes and technology-focused activities under the initiative.
