No Bill on Chandigarh in Winter Session, Says Centre Amid Rising Speculation

Chandigarh: The central government on Sunday clarified that no final decision has been taken on the proposed changes regarding Chandigarh and there is no need for rumours or apprehensions on the issue.

The government said that a proposal to simplify the law-making process for the Union Territory of Chandigarh is currently under consideration, but there is no plan to introduce a bill in the upcoming winter session.

Centre’s clarification: “No change in administrative structure proposed”

The central government has clearly said that the proposal neither changes the administrative structure of Chandigarh nor affects the city’s traditional ties with Punjab and Haryana.

The government said:

•This is only a proposal to simplify the law-making process.

•There is no proposal to change the management, administration or authority structure of Chandigarh.

•There is no intention to change the existing arrangement with Punjab or Haryana.

Decision will be taken only after consulting stakeholders

The central government assured that any decision will be taken only after consulting all stakeholders.

The government said:

•”A suitable decision will be taken keeping in mind the interests of Chandigarh. There is no need to worry about this matter.”

•”No plan to introduce bill in winter session”

•The Centre, clarifying the concerns raised by some political parties and leaders recently, said:

•There is no intention to introduce a bill related to this subject in the upcoming winter session.

•The proposal is only at the stage of internal deliberations.

Background

Recently, political turmoil in Punjab increased when news emerged that a Constitution Amendment Bill may be introduced to bring Chandigarh under the ambit of Article 240.

However, after this clarification from the Center, it has now become clear that no such step is being taken at this time.
