Punjab and Chandigarh are currently in the grip of a cold wave. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for dense fog, cold wave, and cold day conditions for today, January 5th, and tomorrow. This situation is expected to continue until January 9th. As a result, both nighttime and daytime temperatures have started to drop rapidly.
In the last 24 hours, the state’s temperature has dropped by 2.1 degrees Celsius. It is now 4.1 degrees below normal. Hoshiarpur was the coldest, recording a temperature of 6.8 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar experienced a cold day. Temperatures are expected to drop by another 2 to 3 degrees in the next two days.
Zero Visibility Recorded in Several Places
On Sunday, Chandigarh and Punjab experienced foggy conditions throughout the day. The sun did not appear in many places. During this time, zero visibility was recorded in Amritsar, 50 meters in Ballowal, and 200 meters in Gurdaspur. This caused considerable difficulty for motorists. Temperatures ranged from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius in some areas.
Dense Fog Alert in 18 Districts
According to the Meteorological Department, very dense fog is likely today in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Malerkotla.
Dense fog is possible in some places in Pathankot, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, and Bathinda. A cold wave is expected in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, and Bathinda.
In addition, a cold day is likely in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali). The weather is expected to remain dry.
