Osman Hadi Murder: Accusations Rock Yunus Govt Before Polls

Sharif Osman bin Hadi was a prominent youth activist and spokesperson of the Inqilab Moncho, a political and cultural platform that emerged from Bangladesh’s July 2024 uprising. He was known for his outspoken views and was preparing to contest the upcoming February 2026 national election when he was shot in Dhaka on December 12 and later died of his injuries in Singapore on December 18. His killing triggered nationwide protests and intense political controversy.

Brother Alleges Government Faction Behind Murder

On December 24, 2025, Sharif Omar bin Hadi brother of the slain activist directly accused elements within the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of orchestrating Osman Hadi’s assassination. Speaking at a public event in Dhaka’s Shah bagh area, he claimed:

Omar Hadi demanded justice through a speedy trial and warned that if justice is not delivered, the governing authorities themselves “may have to flee Bangladesh” in the future.

Political Fallout and Protests

The allegation has contributed to heightened tensions in Bangladesh:

Meanwhile, the Yunus administration has reaffirmed efforts to arrest those responsible and has instructed law enforcement to maintain order ahead of the elections.

National Elections and Security Context

Bangladesh is preparing for national elections scheduled for February 12, 2026. The country’s political environment remains volatile following the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024 and the current interim administration’s efforts to oversee a smooth transition. The murder of a high-profile activist has intensified scrutiny on the government’s ability to manage security and uphold democratic processes.
