Kullu, Himachal: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has issued a high-alert advisory for residents, tourists and workers after beginning silt flushing operations at the Pulga Dam, warning that water levels in the Parbati River are expected to rise significantly.
According to NHPC’s Parbati-II Power Station, the advisory was issued following rising reservoir levels and the commencement of planned silt flushing at the dam.
Water Discharge Increased to Around 225 Cumecs
Officials said around 50 cumecs of water was released into the Parbati River through the dam’s radial gates from 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. Combined with the existing environmental flow (e-flow), the total discharge into the river has increased to approximately 225 cumecs.
NHPC said additional water may be released if inflow into the reservoir continues to rise.
Silt Flushing May Cause Sudden Rise in River Flow
The silt flushing process at Pulga Dam began at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. NHPC warned that the operation could result in a sudden increase in the river’s water level and flow downstream of the dam.
Residents, tourists and workers have been advised to stay away from the river and its banks until the operation is completed.
Warning Systems Activated for Public Safety
The administration has appealed to hotel owners, guest house operators, homestay owners and taxi drivers to inform tourists about the advisory and discourage them from visiting the riverbanks.
To enhance public safety, NHPC said hooters and sirens would be sounded, while public address vehicles would be deployed in nearby areas to alert people about the rising water levels.
The advisory has been issued in the interest of public safety, and NHPC has urged everyone to cooperate and follow the instructions issued by authorities.
