Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch and inaugurate multiple development projects worth over ₹47,000 crore during his visit to Assam. The initiatives will cover key sectors such as road infrastructure, railways, energy, and social welfare, aimed at boosting economic growth and connectivity in the northeastern region.
The two-day visit includes programmes in cities such as Kokrajhar, Guwahati and Silchar, where the Prime Minister will lay foundation stones, inaugurate projects, and address public gatherings. The projects are expected to strengthen infrastructure and create employment opportunities across the state.
Focus on Infrastructure and Connectivity
One of the key highlights of the visit is the Assam Mala 3.0 road initiative, which involves building more than 900 kilometres of roads to improve connectivity between national highways, rural roads, and border areas. The project alone is valued at over ₹3,200 crore.
Additionally, several road infrastructure projects will be launched in the Bodoland Territorial Region, including the construction of four flyovers and two bridges with an investment of around ₹1,100 crore. These projects are expected to improve transport networks and reduce travel time in the region.
Improved connectivity is seen as crucial for the economic development of the Northeast, helping trade, tourism and regional integration with the rest of the country.
Boost to Railway Infrastructure
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone of a Periodic Overhauling (POH) workshop in Kokrajhar district. The facility is expected to strengthen railway maintenance infrastructure and enhance the operational efficiency of trains running through the region.
In addition, railway connectivity projects aimed at improving transport between major cities of Assam and neighbouring states will also be highlighted during the visit. Improved railway infrastructure is expected to facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods across the Northeast.
Clean Energy and Power Supply Projects
Another important initiative is the dedication of the Kopili Hydro Electric Project, which has been constructed at a cost of more than ₹2,300 crore. The project will significantly increase clean energy generation capacity in the region.
Officials say the hydroelectric project will improve grid stability and provide reliable electricity to households, industries and agricultural sectors in Assam. The government hopes that expanding renewable energy projects will support sustainable development and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Land Rights for Tea Garden Workers
During the visit, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to distribute land pattas (ownership documents) to tea garden workers. This move aims to grant land rights to thousands of workers and their families who have lived in tea plantations for generations without formal land ownership.
The initiative is expected to improve the socio-economic conditions of tea garden communities by giving them legal ownership of homestead land.
Farmers to Receive PM-Kisan Installment
Along with launching development projects, the Prime Minister will release the 22nd installment of the PM-Kisan scheme, which provides financial assistance to farmers across India. Under the scheme, eligible farmers receive ₹2,000 directly in their bank accounts.
More than 9 crore farmers nationwide are expected to benefit from this installment, which aims to support agricultural income and rural livelihoods.
Strategic Importance of Northeast Development
The large investment package highlights the central government’s focus on accelerating development in India’s northeastern region. Infrastructure projects in transportation, energy and welfare sectors are expected to strengthen Assam’s role as a key gateway to Southeast Asia and boost regional economic integration.
With these initiatives, the government aims to improve connectivity, generate employment, and enhance the quality of life for people across Assam and the wider Northeast.
