Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Meerut on February 22, 2026, to inaugurate transformative high-speed infrastructure projects that aim to dramatically improve connectivity in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The visit will witness the dedication to the nation of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor along with the launch of the Meerut Metro system.
Namo Bharat RRTS: A Gamechanger for Commuters
The 82-kilometre Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System will be formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister. Namo Bharat trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h, shortening travel time between Delhi and Meerut to less than an hour a significant improvement over road journeys that can take more than two hours in peak traffic.
The corridor will connect major urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut with rapid, high-frequency service, and integrate seamlessly with existing transport hubs. Stations such as Sarai Kale Khan will serve as major multi-modal hubs, linking the RRTS with the Delhi Metro, Indian Railways and bus services.
Meerut Metro: India’s Fastest Urban Transit
Alongside the RRTS, the Meerut Metro will also be inaugurated, operating on the same shared infrastructure as the Namo Bharat corridor. It is poised to become one of India’s fastest metro systems, with a top operational speed of around 120 km/h, enabling commuters to travel across the city in approximately 30 minutes.
Unique in its design, the shared track system will ensure high-speed intercity travel paired with efficient intra-city movement, setting a new benchmark for integrated urban and regional transit in the country.
Boost to Regional Development and Urban Mobility
The combined launch of the Namo Bharat RRTS and Meerut Metro marks a significant stride in modernising transport infrastructure in western Uttar Pradesh, aligning with broader government efforts to enhance sustainable mobility, decongest roads and cut down carbon emissions.
Officials have stated that these projects will not only reduce travel time but will also spearhead economic growth by promoting seamless connectivity across cities and suburbs a critical component of planned urban expansion in the NCR.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to flag off services from the Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat station and travel on the newly launched systems before addressing a public gathering during the event.
