New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and rising javelin thrower Yashvir Singh after the Indian duo secured a silver and bronze medal, respectively, in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. The Prime Minister praised both athletes for their outstanding performances and said their achievements would inspire young sportspersons across the country.
Neeraj Chopra finished with a season-best throw of 85.83 metres to claim the silver medal, while Yashvir Singh registered a personal-best 85.41 metres to secure bronze, giving India a memorable double podium finish in one of the Games’ marquee athletics events.

Congratulating Yashvir Singh, Prime Minister Modi said the young athlete’s impressive performance reflected his dedication and determination.
He also hailed Neeraj Chopra for once again showcasing consistency and composure on the international stage, stating that the Olympic champion’s achievements continue to make every Indian proud.
Neeraj Claims Silver, Yashvir Wins Career-Best Bronze
Neeraj opened the competition with a throw of 80.97m before improving to 85.83m in his second attempt, which remained his best effort of the event. He later recorded throws of 81.29m and 80.73m, while his final two attempts were fouls.
Yashvir Singh delivered the performance of his career with a personal-best throw of 85.41m, finishing just 42 centimetres behind Neeraj to win the bronze medal.
Sri Lanka’s Pathirage Wins Gold with Games Record
Sri Lanka’s R.T. Pathirage produced the biggest surprise of the competition by winning the gold medal with a Games record throw of 89.75 metres. His remarkable effort denied Neeraj Chopra the chance to defend his Commonwealth title.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished fourth with 83.88m, followed by South Africa’s Douw Smit (82.88m) and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott (82.55m).
Although Neeraj missed out on defending his title, India’s silver and bronze medals highlighted the country’s growing strength in javelin throw and added another successful chapter to its athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
