The weather in Punjab and Chandigarh is expected to change from March 14 as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across several districts. According to the latest forecast, the region may experience unstable weather conditions for about four days due to the impact of a western disturbance over northwest India.
The meteorological department has issued a yellow alert for parts of Punjab and Chandigarh, warning residents about possible thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. These weather activities are expected to start from tomorrow and may continue till March 17.
Officials said the sudden change in weather will bring relief from the rising temperatures that were being felt across the region in early March.
Rain and Thunderstorms Likely for Four Days
IMD forecasts indicate light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in Punjab from March 14 to March 17. Winds during thunderstorms may reach speeds of 30–50 km per hour, which can cause temporary disruptions in daily activities.
Some districts may witness cloudy skies with intermittent showers during this period. Areas such as Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Mohali are likely to experience rainfall and stormy weather during different phases of the four-day period.
Chandigarh and surrounding areas are also expected to receive light rain along with gusty winds and thunderstorm activity.
Temperature to Drop by 2–3°C in 48 Hours
Along with rainfall, a noticeable drop in temperature is expected in Punjab and Chandigarh. Weather experts say that the maximum temperature could fall by about 2–3 degrees Celsius within the next 48 hours due to cloud cover and rain.
In recent days, temperatures in several cities of Punjab had climbed above normal levels for March, causing warm daytime conditions. The approaching weather system is expected to cool down the region slightly and make the weather more pleasant.
Yellow Alert Issued by IMD
The IMD has issued a yellow alert to caution people about possible thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Under a yellow alert, authorities advise residents to stay cautious and keep track of weather updates.
People are advised to avoid open fields during lightning, secure loose outdoor objects and drive carefully during rain and strong winds.
Advisory for Farmers and Residents
Agricultural experts have also advised farmers to remain alert during the forecast period. Sudden rain and gusty winds may affect standing crops such as wheat and mustard in some areas. Farmers are encouraged to monitor weather updates and take protective measures for their fields.
For residents, the rainfall may bring temporary relief from the early heat but could also cause traffic slowdowns and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Weather Likely to Improve After March 17
According to meteorologists, the rain and thunderstorm activity is expected to weaken after March 17 as the western disturbance moves away from the region. After that, weather conditions are likely to become relatively stable again with partly cloudy skies.
Overall, the upcoming spell of rain and storms will mark a short but noticeable shift in the weather pattern across Punjab and Chandigarh, bringing cooler temperatures and relief from rising heat.
