Punjab DSP Dies in Accidental Firing While Cleaning Revolver

Kapurthala, April 21: DSP Yogesh Kumar Sharma, posted with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), died on Tuesday morning after sustaining a gunshot wound at his official residence in Phagwara. According to the police, the DSP was cleaning his service revolver when the weapon accidentally discharged and the bullet struck him in the chest.

Upon learning of the incident, family members immediately rushed him to a hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The police are currently investigating whether this was a case of suicide or if his death resulted from an accidental discharge of the firearm.

Kapurthala SP Madhvi Sharma stated that further action in the case would be taken based on the family’s statement. For the time being, the incident appears to be a case of accidental firing. Notably, he had been transferred to Chandigarh just three days prior.

DSP Was Present at Home with His Family

The incident is reported to have occurred around 7:30 AM. At that time, DSP Yogesh Kumar was at home with his family members—his wife, parents, son, and daughter. Following the incident, he was immediately taken to a private hospital in Jalandhar, where doctors declared him dead.

SSP Confirms the Incident

Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora has confirmed the incident. He stated that the officer had been transferred from the ANTF to the Bureau of Investigation (BOI) in Chandigarh just three days earlier. Information provided by the family indicates that DSP Yogesh Kumar was cleaning his weapon when it accidentally discharged.

SP States: Panel of Doctors to Conduct Post-mortem

Upon receiving information about the incident, SP Madhvi Sharma immediately rushed to the scene. She stated, “A tragic incident has occurred within the police quarters falling under the jurisdiction of the Phagwara Sadar Police Station.” Our DSP, Yogesh Kumar Sharma, has passed away. He was currently posted in Chandigarh.” He had been transferred from the ANTF.

The SP stated that the DSP was required to deposit his service weapon following his new posting. This morning, after having his tea and breakfast, he was cleaning his weapon. While he was cleaning it, an accidental discharge occurred, and the bullet struck him in the chest. Personnel present at his quarters immediately rushed him to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The SP added that further action would be initiated based on the statements provided by the family. The entire police department stands in solidarity with his family. The body has been sent to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which will be conducted by a panel of doctors.
