New Delhi: A large number of farmers from Punjab left for Delhi on Sunday to protest the proposed India-US trade agreement. A mahapanchayat will be held on July 21st at Delhi’s Kisan Ghat under the banner of the “Desh Bachao Morcha.” Organizers claim that representatives from approximately 550 farmer organizations and social organizations from across the country will participate.
Fears of Impact on Small Farmers
Before leaving, Germanjit Singh Bandala, leader of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, stated that the proposed trade deal would adversely impact small and marginal farmers, farm laborers, small businesses, and the general public. He stated that farmers in the United States benefit from substantial government subsidies and large-scale farming, while most Indian farmers own only 2 to 2.5 acres of land. Consequently, the influx of cheap American agricultural products will make it difficult for Indian farmers to compete.
Concerns also about employment and small businesses
Bandala alleged that the agreement would benefit American companies and farmers, while harming India’s agricultural sector and small businesses. He stated that the impact would not be limited to agriculture, but would also impact employment and local businesses.
Warning to intensify agitation
Farmer leaders stated that if they are prevented from reaching Delhi, they will hold peaceful protests wherever they are stopped. He warned that if the central government did not withdraw the proposed India-US trade deal and did not accept the demands of the farmers, the movement would be further expanded.
