Amritsar, August 14: The Meteorological Center in Punjab has issued a yellow alert regarding rain today. Heavy rains are expected in the state on August 16. Rains are expected in the districts adjoining Himachal. Due to the rains in Himachal, there is a danger of floods in Punjab.
At the same time , a flash alert has been issued regarding the possibility of heavy rains with lightning and strong winds (30-40 km per hour) in Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and Hoshiarpur. According to the Meteorological Department, this alert will remain till 10:30 am.
Due to the continuous release of water from Pong Dam, the Beas river is flowing above the danger mark, while the water level of the Sutlej river has also increased. This situation has created flood-like conditions in Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Amritsar and Ferozepur districts. Many areas of Sultanpur Lodhi and Hoshiarpur districts are currently submerged in water. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert, predicting heavy rainfall in the state on August 14 and 15.
Water level rising in dams
According to the report of 6 am on 13 August 2025, the water level in Bhakra, Pong and Thein Dam is continuously increasing-
The water level of Bhakra Dam situated on Sutlej river was recorded at 1650.08 feet, whereas its full filling capacity is 1685 feet. Currently, it has 4.587 million acre feet (MAF) of water, which is 77.51 percent of its total capacity. Last year on the same day, this level was 1623.99 feet and the capacity was 3.725 MAF.
The water level in Pong Dam built on Beas river has reached 1377.47 feet, whereas its full filling capacity is 1400 feet. It currently has 4.780 MAF water, which is 78.02 percent of its total capacity. Last year on this day, the water level was 1347.94 feet and the capacity was 3.3 MAF.
The water level in Thein Dam built on the Ravi river has been recorded at 1701.95 feet, while its full filling capacity is 1731.98 feet. It has 2.092 MAF water, which is 78.56 percent of its total capacity. Last year on the same day, the water level was 1632.1 feet and the capacity was 1.184 MAF.
Temperatures rise due to dry days
Yesterday, the day remained dry in most districts of Punjab. After which an increase in temperature was observed. The average maximum temperature of Punjab has increased by 2.6 degrees. However, the average temperature of the state remains close to normal. At the same time, the maximum temperature of Abohar was recorded at 36.2 degrees, which was the highest in the state.
The temperature was 32.7 degrees in Amritsar, 32.9 degrees in Ludhiana, 35.8 degrees in Patiala, 34.5 degrees in Faridkot, 34 degrees in Gurdaspur, 35.4 degrees in Ferozepur. Apart from this, light rain was also seen in Hoshiarpur.
Alert regarding rain in 7 districts today
A yellow alert has been issued for rain today in 7 districts of Punjab – Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib. However, the weather will remain normal in other districts.
Apart from this, an alert for heavy rain has been issued in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib till August 16. After this, the coming days are going to be dry and an increase in temperature can be seen.
