Punjab and Chandigarh are currently experiencing scorching heat. The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre has issued a severe heatwave alert for three days. It is anticipated that conditions in several districts could become extremely critical due to the heatwave. In view of rising temperatures, the Punjab government has revised the timings for government offices and schools, effective from today.
In Chandigarh, schools have been ordered to remain closed until June 30. Due to the intense heat, outdoor activities during summer camps in Chandigarh schools have also been suspended.
On Sunday, Bathinda recorded the highest temperature in the state at 44.6°C.
Over the past 24 hours, a slight rise of 0.3°C was recorded in temperature. Bathinda remained the hottest district, with extreme heat conditions prevailing across the region.
Heatwave Alert Issued for Multiple Districts
On Monday, severe heatwave conditions are likely in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and Mohali. A severe heatwave alert has also been issued for Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, and Mansa.
The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre has issued a heatwave alert across most districts of Punjab, with severe heat conditions expected in several areas from May 25 to May 27.
Weather Likely to Change from May 28
According to Surender Pal, Director of the Chandigarh Meteorological Centre, dry weather is expected to continue from today until May 27. After this, light to moderate rainfall is likely in some areas on May 29 and 30.
He added that maximum temperatures may rise by 2 to 4°C over the next four days, followed by a drop of 3 to 5°C thereafter. The Meteorological Department has also issued warnings for May 28 to 30, indicating the possibility of thunderstorms, dust storms, lightning, and strong winds of 40–50 km/h in several regions.
