Petrol and diesel prices have increased by around ₹3 per litre across Punjab following the latest nationwide fuel price revision triggered by rising global crude oil prices and the ongoing West Asia crisis.
After the hike, petrol prices in several Punjab cities crossed the ₹100 per litre mark, while diesel prices also recorded a sharp increase.
According to the revised rates, petrol in Punjab is now available at nearly ₹101 per litre on average, compared to the earlier rate of around ₹98. Diesel prices have risen from approximately ₹87.83 to ₹90.78 per litre, though rates continue to vary slightly between cities because of local taxes and transportation charges.
Jalandhar Petrol Price Crosses ₹100 Mark
Jalandhar witnessed one of the most noticeable fuel price increases in the state.
Revised Fuel Rates in Jalandhar
- Petrol: ₹100.54 per litre (earlier ₹97.57)
- Diesel: ₹90.35 per litre (earlier ₹87.41)
The latest revision pushed petrol prices in the city beyond the ₹100 mark for the first time in recent months.
Pathankot Also Sees Sharp Increase
Fuel prices in Pathankot also rose significantly after the latest revision.
Revised Fuel Rates in Pathankot
- Petrol: ₹101.60 per litre (earlier ₹98.63)
- Diesel: ₹91.36 per litre (earlier ₹88.42)
Pathankot currently has some of the highest fuel prices in Punjab following the increase.
Why Fuel Prices Have Increased
Officials and industry experts attribute the fuel price hike mainly to the sharp rise in global crude oil prices amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
The increase in the cost of imported crude oil, along with higher prices of fuel additives blended into petrol and diesel, has added pressure on oil marketing companies.
India imports a major portion of its crude oil requirements, making domestic fuel prices highly sensitive to international market fluctuations and geopolitical developments.
PM Modi Earlier Urged Citizens to Save Fuel
The latest fuel hike comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption in view of the ongoing geopolitical situation in West Asia.
Speaking at a public event in Telangana earlier this week, Modi urged people to use petrol, diesel, and gas carefully and avoid wastage. He said conserving imported petroleum products would help reduce pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves and minimise the economic impact of the global crisis.
Consumers Likely to Feel Inflation Impact
The increase in petrol and diesel prices is expected to impact transportation costs, logistics, and the prices of essential goods across Punjab and other states.
Higher diesel prices, in particular, may increase freight charges and affect food supply chains, potentially contributing to inflation in the coming weeks.
Industry observers believe future fuel price movements will depend largely on international crude oil trends and developments in the Middle East conflict.
