Punjab Weather: Rain Alert & 7.6°C Temp Drop Till March 21

LUDHIANA, PUNJAB — A significant shift in weather patterns has gripped Punjab, bringing a welcome respite from the premature summer heat but raising concerns for the agricultural sector. Following a recent spell of rainfall, temperatures across the state have plummeted, with some regions recording a sharp drop of up to 7.6°C within just 48 hours.

Chilly Winds and Falling Mercury

The Meteorological Department reports that the average maximum temperature in Punjab has fallen significantly below the seasonal normal. In Ludhiana, the minimum temperature settled at 11.5°C on Monday, marking a substantial dip. This change is attributed to an active Western Disturbance currently prevailing as an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the region. Experts suggest that while the weather may remain stable for a brief 24-hour window, another dip is expected as a fresh system approaches.

Rain Alert for Four Districts

The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers in at least four major districts. Areas including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar are on high alert. Additionally, cloudy skies are expected to persist in Ludhiana, Patiala, and Jalandhar. The “bad weather” spell, characterized by intermittent clouds and localized showers, is predicted to last until March 21.

Yellow Alert Issued for March 19-20

Meteorologists have issued a Yellow Alert for March 19 and 20. During this period, the state is likely to witness:

Impact on Agriculture and Farmers

The sudden change in weather has prompted a cautionary advisory from the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and the IMD. While light rain can benefit the standing wheat crop by cooling the environment, strong gusty winds pose a threat of “lodging” (bending of the stalks), which can significantly reduce yield and quality. Farmers have been advised to:

  1. Delay Irrigation: Avoid watering fields during high-wind warnings.

  2. Safety First: Keep livestock in sheltered areas to protect them from lightning and falling debris.

  3. Monitor Updates: Stay tuned to local weather bulletins before scheduling any harvesting or spraying activities.

As the Western Disturbance continues its journey across Northwest India, residents are advised to keep light woolens handy, as the mercury is expected to remain volatile for the remainder of the week.
