Punjab University is the pride of Punjabis. The Central Government recently dissolved its Senate and Syndicate. This sparked protests from the Punjab government, university students, student groups, and various political parties. In response to the protests, the Central Government withdrew its order and promised to announce the next elections soon. However, the student community insisted that dates be announced for the Senate and Syndicate elections, which had not been held for a year. If these elections were announced as usual, the question of reshaping Punjab University, as demanded by the student groups, would be eliminated.
Students staged sit-ins and protests. Examinations were postponed, and farmers’ organisations joined the students in raising their voices. It was stated that if Punjab University elected the Senate and Syndicate as per the wishes of the Central Government, the dignity of Punjab University would be lost, and its unbroken relationship with Punjab would be lost. Students were adamant that the dates for the Senate and Syndicate elections be announced, as the rule is that elections are held 240 days after the dates are announced. If the election dates are announced now, elections will be held 240 days later, as usual, and the structure of Panjab University will remain unchanged. The demand has been accepted.
Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan approved the Senate election schedule on Thursday, November 27th. The date for holding the elections, which had not been held for more than a year, has now been set. Elections for various sections of the university will be held between September 7th, 2026, and October 4th, 2026.
The Vice President, Chancellor of Panjab University, has issued his approval letter to Vice Chancellor Renu Wig. Previously, the Vice Chancellor had requested permission to hold the elections. Upon receiving the news of the approval, students protesting under the banner of the Punjab University Bachao Morcha (Save Punjab University), demanding the election schedule, were elated. Student representatives first met with the Vice Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor has released the Senate election schedule. The announcement of the election schedule effectively reverses the government’s withdrawal of the order. With the dispute resolved, the academic environment should return to the glory for which the university is known.
