Chandigarh: Punjab and Chandigarh are set to witness a major change in weather conditions starting today. According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, several parts of Punjab and Chandigarh are likely to receive rain accompanied by thunder and lightning over the next three days. Strong winds with speeds ranging between 60 and 70 kilometers per hour are also expected during this period, while hailstorms may occur in some areas.
The weather department has predicted a 51% to 75% probability of rain or thundershowers across different districts of Punjab and Chandigarh on May 29 and 30. Officials believe the changing weather conditions may provide temporary relief from the intense heatwave affecting the region for the past several days.
Strong Winds and Hailstorm Alert Issued
The Meteorological Centre has warned that thunderstorms and gusty winds could disrupt normal life in some districts. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during bad weather, especially while travelling or parking vehicles under trees and weak structures. Farmers have also been urged to take precautions due to the possibility of hailstorms in certain areas.
Temperatures Continue to Rise Above Normal
Despite the expected rainfall, temperatures across Punjab and Chandigarh continue to remain above normal levels. Over the last 24 hours, the mercury has increased by 1.4 degrees Celsius. The average temperature is currently running 4.1 degrees above normal for this time of the year.
Faridkot recorded the highest temperature in Punjab at 46 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places in the state. Chandigarh also experienced intense heat, with the maximum temperature touching 43.1 degrees Celsius.
Health Advisory During Nautapa
With extreme heat conditions continuing alongside humidity and unstable weather, health experts have advised people to take extra precautions during the ongoing ‘Nautapa’ period. Residents are being encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and take necessary measures to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.
