AAP MLA from Tarn Taran Kashmir Singh Sohal passes away

AAP MLA from Tarn Taran Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal, has passed away. He was battling cancer for some time, due to which he was away from political activities. He took his last breath at Escort Hospital in Amritsar. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has expressed grief over his demise.

The Chief Minister wrote in the message,  “Received the sad news of the sudden demise of our party’s respected MLA from Tarn Taran, Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal. I am very saddened to hear this. He was a hardworking and struggling leader of the party. My heartfelt condolences to his family in this sad hour. May God grant peace to the departed soul and give patience and courage to the family and loved ones in this difficult time.”

Paying tributes, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal wrote in a post on X, “The news of Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal Ji’s passing is extremely sad. May God grant peace to his soul and give strength to his family during this difficult time.


He is survived by his wife Navjot Kaur Hundal, a son and a daughter. Both his children are doctors.

Born in the village of Dera Sohal

Born on 20 February 1959 to Kundan Singh, a resident of village Dera Sohal in Amritsar district, Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal joined the medical field after his college studies. While studying at Medical College, Amritsar, he was active in the student wing. He started working as a medical officer at a time when terrorism was at its peak in Punjab. During his posting at Miavid Hospital in 1986, he also decided to do social service.

Joined AAP in 2014

Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal played an important role in forming the Citizens Council in Tarn Taran. While serving as an eye specialist in a government hospital, he was transferred to Civil Hospital Tarn Taran. He also raised his voice against the increasing fees in schools by forming a parents’ association.

He also participated in a long hunger strike to make Tarn Taran a district. In 2013, as SMO, Dr. Sohal retired from the Health Department and started doing social service. In 2014, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party and started working day and night. He contested the election for the first time on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket from Tarn Taran and was elected.
