After whopping penalty by NGT Punjab Govt in action, officers appointed for cross checking of waste disposal

Ludhiana: After the imposition of the whooping amount of Rs 1026 Crore fine by NGT on the Punjab government over mismanagement in waste disposal, Punjab government has come into action mode. The government is overlooking the working of civic departments at the ground level. In each city, the civic department has appointed more than 6 officers for cross-checking of management of waste.

On the orders of the government, Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC) has appointed officers of the civic department to inspect cities across Punjab. These officers will inspect the cities to see how much waste is generated daily in which city and how much source segregation of waste is being done door to door.

Apart from this, they will also check how much waste is being processed daily and the status of disposal of old waste lying at dump sites. After investigating all these, a report will be given to the government.

Cross-checking is being done in the main cities of the state which include, Ludhiana, Phagwara, Mohali, Patiala, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Batala, Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Abohar, Khanna, Ferozepur, Moga, Malerkotla, Kharar, Rup Nagar, Nawanshahr, Zikarpur, Lalru, Rajpura.

Earlier on September 22, 2022, Fine of Rs 2,080 crore was imposed on the Punjab government by National Green Tribunal over the same reasons. Now after two years, NGT citing the deferment of earlier order imposed fine of Rs 1,026 crore on Punjab government towards environmental compensation.
