Big decision on Sukhbir Badal’s religious and political future, Akal Takht calls meeting of Sikh scholars

Amritsar: The decision on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal’s religious and political future will be considered today. Sri Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh has called an important meeting at the Sri Akal Takht office, in which the case of “Tankhaiya” Sukhbir Badal will be discussed with Sikh scholars and intellectuals.

This meeting will consider the possible religious punishment to be given to him. 18 Sikh scholars and intellectuals will participate in this discussion.

These members include former Akal Takht Jathedar Manjit Singh, former VC of Punjabi University Jaspal Singh, Inderjit Singh Gogoani, Amarjit Singh, Harsimran Singh, Jaspal Singh Sidhu and Hamir Singh. Apart from these, some senior journalists have also been invited.

Disgruntled leaders associated with the Akali Dal had questioned some religious decisions taken during the Akali government (2007-2017), which they described as against the interests of Sikhism. After this, the Akal Takht declared Sukhbir Badal as Tankhaiya on 30 August 2024, but no punishment has been given till now.

Due to being declared Tankhaiya, Sukhbir Singh Badal was not allowed to campaign or participate in the assembly by-elections. Due to this, the Akali Dal distanced itself from the by-elections. However, in the Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (SGPC) elections, the Akali Dal-supported candidate has become the president.
