Congress protest against turncoat councillor, police takes former MLA Rajinder Beri in custody

Jalandhar: After not getting a majority in the municipal corporation elections in Jalandhar, Aam Aadmi Party inducted 2 Congress councilors into the party. Angry at this, workers of Congressmen staged a sit-in outside the house of Manmeet Kaur, who was elected councilor from ward-47. Manmeet Kaur joined AAP after winning the election on a Congress ticket.

During the sit-in, police officials detained many Congress leaders including former MLA Rajinder Beri. Earlier yesterday, on Tuesday, a sit-in was held outside the residence of Praveen Wasan, who defeated former mayor Jagdish Raj Raja’s wife Anita Raja on a Congress ticket, in Vijay Nagar.

During this, there was a lot of ruckus between the police and Congress leaders. After former MLA Rajinder Beri was taken into custody, Congress leaders took out a march from outside the house of councilor Manmeet Kaur and reached outside Bhargava Camp police station. During this, Congressmen raised slogans against the government. When the Congress leaders, standing with Congress flags, reached outside the police station, the doors of the police station were closed.

Congress’ Jalandhar West constituency in-charge Surinder Kaur said that people of the West constituency expressed faith in Congress but Manmeet Kaur joined AAP. She added that she had come to talk to Manmeet only about the pressure under which she left the party.

ACP Harshpreet Singh of Jalandhar West constituency reached the spot with his team and asked former MLA Rajinder Beri whether he had any permission to hold a dharna. Meanwhile, the police started lifting the Congress leaders from the dharna and took Beri along by holding his hand.

The Congress leaders said that they will not end the protest until Rajinder Beri is released.
