Congress protest in Amritsar over alleged mayor election rigging

Amritsar: The newly appointed Mayor of Amritsar Municipal Corporation, Jitendra Singh Moti Bhatia will take charge today on 28 January 2025. Meanwhile, the state unit of Congress has reached Bhandari Bridge and started a protest against the Aam Aadmi Party.

Congress alleges that they had the majority but still they were not allowed to become mayor through rigging.

Here, all preparations have been completed at the main office of the Municipal Corporation located at Ranjit Avenue. Corporation Commissioner Gurpreet Singh said that along with the newly appointed Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor Priyanka Sharma and Deputy Mayor Anita will also take charge of their respective offices.

Congress accuses misuse of government machinery

After the announcement of the mayor by the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress leaders came out in protest outside the medical college. This protest, under the leadership of Congress state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, continued till late evening. Around 7 o’clock, all the Congress leaders left the medical college and sat outside the house of Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar. After a long protest, the protest was ended.

Congressmen will approach the High Court

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and senior Congress leaders clarified that they had a majority of 42 councillors. Apart from this, 4 Akali Dal councillors were also with them. After the walkout of BJP, the majority is completely with them. In such a situation, now they will approach the Punjab-Haryana High Court. He said that similar situation had arisen in Chandigarh last year, even then Congress fought in the Supreme Court and made its own mayor.
