Hoshiarpur: Police in Hoshiarpur on Monday said that a drug smuggler has been injured in a police encounter after he opened fire on the police vehicle while trying to escape a blockade.
Official sources said that acting on anti-drug intelligence, Garhdiwal police set up a road check. When signaled to stop, Sunny sped off, triggering a chase.
During the pursuit, Sunny’s vehicle crashed into a tree. As he exited the car, he fired at the police. The police retaliated, injuring him. He was later captured and referred to Civil Hospital, Dasuya. A country-made 2000-300 bore pistol was recovered from him.
SSP Sandeep Malik confirmed the action as part of an intensified crackdown on drug smuggling in the region.
