Chandigarh: The Haryana government has objected to the Malwa Canal being built by the Punjab government. The Haryana government has also written a letter to the Union Ministry of Water Power regarding this matter. The Haryana government has prepared to raise the matter in the meeting of the standing committee of the North Zonal Council to be held on September 6.
The council has also included this matter in the agenda of the meeting. Haryana objects that Punjab is building a third feeder from Harike port, while Haryana has not been informed about it. While Punjab is releasing water from Madhopur and Ferozepur to Pakistan. Haryana also says that Punjab and Rajasthan are already giving more water than Ravi and Beas rivers.
Let us tell you that last month, the government led by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had said that the visionary decision to construct the ‘Malwa Canal’ in the state will help to irrigate about two lakh acres of land in the state, with which the state will usher in a new era of unprecedented growth and progress.
The canal is proposed to be constructed from Harike headworks to the left side of the Rajasthan Feeder Canal from its headworks to village Waring Khera and part of the canal will also be built on the land belonging to the State of Rajasthan Government for construction of the Rajasthan Feeder. This canal will provide an additional source of water to the left side of the Rajasthan Feeder Canal, which cannot be supplied in adequate quantity by the Sirhind Feeder Canal. The 149.53 km long canal has a proposed capacity of 2000 cusec and will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2300 crore.
