Congress sweeps Punjab in 2024 Lok Sabha elections: AAP claims 3, independents 2, SAD secures 1, BJP empty-handed

Punajb: In a dramatic turn of events, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab have reshaped the political landscape of the state. With 13 seats up for grabs, the Indian National Congress emerged as the frontrunner, securing a significant victory with seven seats firmly in its grasp.

The unexpected outcome took many by surprise as the Congress triumphed in key constituencies across the state. Harsimrat Kaur Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) managed to retain the Bhatinda seat, providing a glimmer of hope for her party amidst a challenging electoral landscape. However, the Congress demonstrated its prowess by clinching victories in prominent regions including Patiala, Amritsar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, and Firozpur.

One of the most unexpected victories of the election was the triumph of jailed Khalistani separatist and Waris Punjab De Chief, Amritpal Singh, from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib constituency.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), while not achieving the same level of success as the Congress, secured three seats, including its stronghold of Sangrur. AAP’s candidate, Gurjeet Singh Meet Hayer, emerged victorious in Sangrur, Hoshiarpur, and Anandpur Sahib Constituencies, further solidifying the party’s presence in the state.

Notably, independent candidates also made their mark in Punjab’s electoral landscape. Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, son of one of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, emerged victorious in the Faridkot Lok Sabha seat, symbolizing complexity of Punjab’s political fabric.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite its significant presence in national politics, failed to secure a single seat in Punjab’s Lok Sabha elections.
Sher Singh Ghubaya of the Congress has won from Firozpur seat with a slender margin of 3,242 votes. He defeated Jagdeep Singh Kaka Brar of the AAP and Gurmit Singh Sodhi of the BJP. Ghubaya got 2,66,626votes, followed by 2,63,384 for AAP’s Jagdeep Singh Kaka Brar.

Gurjeet Singh Aujla of the Cogress has won from Amritsar, with a margin of 40,146 votes. He defeated Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal of AAP and Taranjit Singh Sandhu of the BJP.

Dharamvira Gandhi of the Congress won the Patiala constituency with a margin of 14,831 votes. He was followed by AAP’s Balbir Singh, who got 2,90,785 votes. Other candidates from the constituency included Preneet Kaur of the BJP and N K Sharma of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

As the 10-hour mark approaches in Ludhiana, Amrinder Raja Warring from INC has taken the lead, followed by Ravneet Singh Bittu from BJP by 25229 votes.

AAP’s Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer defeated Sukhpal Singh Khaira of the Congress, who got 1,91,525 votes. Simranjit Singh Mann of SAD (A) finished third after getting 1,87,246 votes.

After former chief minister and Congress candidate Charanjit Singh Channi’s victory from Punjab’s Jalandhar seat, the party’s Fatehgarh Sahib candidate Amar Singh was declared winner, with a margin of 34,202 votes. Amar Singh got a total of 3,32,591 votes.
