Lovely Professional University terminates all MoUs with Turkiye and Azerbaijan, upholds national security as top priority

Jalandhar [Punjab]: Demonstrating national solidarity, Lovely Professional University (LPU) has become the first private university in India to sever all its Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with institutions in Turkey and Azerbaijan.

LPU has officially ended six academic collaborations with universities in these two countries, citing recent geopolitical developments that are considered contrary to India’s national interests. The decision includes the immediate termination of student and faculty exchange programs, joint research projects, dual degree schemes, and all other forms of academic cooperation with institutions from Turkey and Azerbaijan. This move responds to the pro-Pakistan stance taken by these nations amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

Announcing the move, Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Founder Chancellor of LPU, emphasized, “As our armed forces risk their lives—whether in covert operations, air defense, or border patrol—we cannot remain passive as an educational institution.”

He further stated, “LPU’s mission aligns with India’s growth and sovereignty, and we will not partner with any institution that undermines our nation’s integrity. While diplomacy is reserved for governments, the academic community also has a moral duty. Defending national security isn’t only about borders—they must be protected in classrooms, boardrooms, and international collaborations.”

Earlier, in response to growing backlash against Turkey, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) announced the suspension of its MoU with Inonu University in Turkey, citing national security considerations. In a statement on X, JNU said, “Due to National Security considerations, the MoU with Inonu University, Turkey, has been suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation.”

This decision comes amidst rising public sentiment against Turkey and Azerbaijan, especially after their recent support for Pakistan following India’s military operation, ‘Operation Sindoor’.
