Ludhiana: Punjab Pollution Control Board fines dyeing units Rs 6.42 crore

Ludhiana: The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) is continuously taking action on dyeing units in Ludhiana. Punjab Pollution Control Board has imposed a fine of Rs 6.42 crore on a dyeing unit and the operators have to deposit this fine within 15 days. After this action of PPCB, there is panic among the dyeing industry operators. The said action has been taken on the dyeing unit named Sumit Knit fab in Ludhiana.

The board has taken this action due to a violation of the Pollution Act by the unit operators. Action has already been taken against this unit for going against the rules. Let us tell you, the last time when the board took action on this dyeing unit, the electricity connection was cut off.

Action has been taken earlier also

A complaint against the said dyeing unit had reached the Punjab Pollution Control Board for violating the rules of Pollution Act. It is learned that in January 2019, the officials had found in the investigation that the said unit was being run without approval. At the same time, untreated discharge was also being dumped into the sewer. The Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) installed in the factory was not in good condition.

When the discharge sample was taken and tested, the parameters were not found to be correct. In these circumstances, orders were given to cut the electricity connection in 2019. After this, the factory was allowed to run under certain conditions. When the complaint reached the monitoring committee of NGT in August 2020, the operators of the unit were unable to present the old records. Therefore, now when the team reached for investigation, many harmful chemicals were found scattered in the factory. Keeping in view of the past record and present violations done by unit, the board management took action and fined the operators of Rs 6,42,25,000.
