Ludhiana writes history: Inderjit Kaur becomes first woman Mayor

Ludhiana:

Ludhiana has created a history as the Aam Aadmi Party woman wing district president and former School Principal Inderjit Kaur has been unanimously elected as the first woman mayor of the city on Monday.

Inderjit Kaur, who won as councilor from ward number 13 during her maiden attempt, was selected for the post of Mayor by the senior leadership of the party. Today Aam Aadmi Party, while proving its majority with 48 seats in 95-member Ludhiana Corporation, unanimously elected Inderjit Kaur.

The Mayoral seat for Ludhiana was reserved for women by the government.

Besides, Rakesh Parashar has been elected as the Senior Deputy Mayor, and Prince Johar as the Deputy Mayor.

Aam Aadmi Party Punjab President Aman Arora was here in Ludhiana to congratulate Inderjit Kaur as well as the entire team.

Arora congratulated all the newly elected office bearers and said that under the leadership of Aam Aadmi Party, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation administration will work with complete honesty and transparency and pave the way for the city’s development.

While addressing the media, Arora said that today marks the beginning of a new chapter in Ludhiana, the Aam Aadmi Party has given Ludhiana its first female Mayor. Our Deputy Mayor, Rakesh Parashar, is also highly experienced, having been elected as a councilor six times.

He further stated that since the municipal election results across Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party has secured over 35 Mayor and President positions so far. This is a matter of immense pride for us and marks a new beginning for Punjab as well.

Speaking about future strategies, Arora said that stalled development works will be completed expeditiously, and new plans will be implemented to make the city beautiful and clean. He emphasized that keeping the city clean and providing basic amenities to the people is their top priority. For this, our Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and all councilors will work tirelessly.

Earlier, the newly elected councillors of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) were administered an oath by Divisional Commissioner, Patiala Daljit Singh Mangat. Being the members of the general house of MC, Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian, MLA Madan Lal Bagga, MLA Ashok Prashar Pappi, MLA Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal, MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina, MLA Kulwant Singh Sidhu and MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal among other officials were also present during the oath taking ceremony.

Inderjit Kaur holds B.com, MBA and B.Ed degrees

 

Coming from a non-political background, the first woman Mayor of Ludhiana Inderjit Kaur holds B.com, MBA and B.Ed degrees.

Kaur said that she was serving as Principal of a private school in a colony of Subhash Nagar of the city for the past around 10 years and had resigned just prior to the MC elections in 2024.

She added that she had joined Aam Aadmi Party in 2019 as she was impressed by Arvind Kejriwal’s ideology and the works of the party.

Kaur was designated as District President of the woman wing of the Aam Aadmi Party after the party came to power in the state in 2022. Till date Kaur is the district president of the woman wing of the party.

AAP MLA from Ludhiana East constituency Daljit Singh Grewal (Bhola) said that Inderjit Kaur and her husband Lucky Anand, who is into hosiery business, were actively involved in campaigning for the party and even after AAP came to power, Inderjit Kaur used to actively aware the residents about the government schemes and used to ensure people get benefit from them.
