Chandigarh Court Tragedy: Suspended Punjab AIG shoots IRS officer son-in-law, during divorce hearing

Chandigarh: A man identified as Harpreet Singh, an IRS officer was shot dead on the premises of Chandigarh district court today afternoon. Harpreet was allegedly killed by his father-in-law, Malwainder Singh Sandhu, a suspended inspector of the Punjab Police.

An IRS officer was involved in a matrimonial dispute with his wife and had reached the district court for a hearing in the case.

According to the sources, this was the third hearing in the same matter.

From both sides, families had arrived at the Chandigarh District court. During the session, Malwinder Singh requested to use the washroom and asked Harpreet to show him the way. A few moments later, Malwinder took out a pistol and shot Harpreet twice, spontaneously falling to the floor.


People gathered at the point and nearby advocates and people rushed him to the hospital in sector 16. During the treatment, Harpreet died.

Punjab Police reached the spot and arrested the accused from there.

Former AIG Malvinder Singh Sidhu has had a long history of controversies. In October 2023, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau registered a case against Malvinder Singh Sidhu and his two associates on charges of extortion, fraud, and bribery.
