Chandigarh: The battle of Chandigarh Mayor Election has now reached the Supreme Court. A petition has been filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and current Mayor Kuldeep Kumar regarding this matter. In which there was a demand to conduct the election by raising hands to bring transparency in the election process. Also, the process of secret voting was challenged. During the hearing of this case, the apex court has asked to appoint a retired High Court judge as an observer. Kuldeep Singh’s lawyer said that the apex court has fixed the date of 27 January 2025 for the next hearing of the case. Notice has been issued to Chandigarh Corporation and Administration. At the same time, now the administration will hold elections on January 30. The nomination process will be held on January 25.

Earlier this matter reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In the High Court, he had told that the proposal was passed in the Municipal Corporation on October 29. It was clarified that the election of the Mayor will be conducted by raising hands. For the election process, the court has said that the administration should reconsider it. Because the proposal has been passed. The administration has not approved it yet. After this he went to the apex court. However, he challenged the second decision to hold the election on January 24. In which he got a big relief. Also, the court ordered not to hold the mayor election till 29th. At the same time, orders have been issued regarding videography and its security and election officer in the election.

If we look at the current situation, BJP is the largest party in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. BJP has a total of 15 councilors. While Congress MP Manish Tiwari is currently in Chandigarh. In such a situation, Congress has eight and AAP has 13 councilors. The magic number for victory here is 18.
