Chandigarh Congress VP arrested for Rs 2.30 crore fraud; wife detained in plot registration scandal

Mohali: Mohali police have arrested the vice president of Chandigarh Congress and a candidate for the post of councillor Rupinder Singh alias Rupi, his wife Balwinder Kaur, son and Youth Congress leader Ranjot Singh alias Ronnie, and his father Jaspal Singh, accused of cheating on Rs 2.30 crore. An FIR in this case and Rupinder Singh and his wife Balwinder Kaur have been arrested.

However, Jaspal Singh has not been arrested yet. Police produced three accused in the court from where they were sent on two-day police remand.

The money was earned from the purchase and sale of plot number located in Mohali. Complainant Saurabh Goyal, a resident of Sector 70, Mohali, alleged that the accused had struck a deal with him for a plot worth Rs 14.28 crore. Under this deal, Rs 5 lakh was first given as token money. After this, Rs 2 crore, 30 lakh was given in several installments. However, when the time came for the registration of the plot, the accused started making excuses and failed to get the registration done.

On the contrary, the accused stated to the police that they had no agreement with Saurabh Goyal. During the investigation, the police found that this statement was false and Saurabh Goyal’s allegations were found to be true.

The Mohali police have registered a case against Rupinder Singh, his wife Balwinder Kaur, son Ranjot Singh, and father Jaspal Singh under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (breach of trust), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. Rupinder Singh and his wife have been taken into custody by the police from their house, while the arrest of the other accused is yet to be done. Mohali Phase-1 police station is investigating this case.
