Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued orders for videography regarding the elections of five municipal corporations and 44 municipal councils to be held on December 21 in Punjab. The High Court has given orders to the State Election Commission. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on November 13, while the withdrawal of names will be done on December 14. On this day, election symbols will be issued to the candidates.
A petition in this regard was filed in the High Court by Patiala BJP leader Vijay Kumar and others. It was argued in the petition that at many places in Punjab, especially in Patiala, their candidates are being prevented from filing nominations. In such a situation, the court should issue orders to the State Election Commission in this matter.
A complaint has also been given to the Election Commission by the party in this regard. Wherever elections are to be held in the entire Punjab including Patiala, there was a demand to get the entire process videographed.
22 IAS officers have been appointed as observers by the Election Commission. Out of these, five have been given the responsibility of municipal corporations. While observers have been deployed in the remaining city councils and municipal councils.
All will take up their duties today. Orders have been issued to them by the commission. These officers will play their role regarding law and order, election-related complaints, and code of conduct in all the districts.
