Chandigarh, July 20: Questions have again been raised on some private chemist shops operating inside PGI Chandigarh. It is alleged that medicines are being sold to patients at a price 50% higher than the MRP. Not only this, shopkeepers are deliberately increasing the actual price of medicines by giving the lure of discounts, so that more money can be charged.
These serious allegations have been made by the Medical Technologist Association. Association’s Ashwani Munjal has demanded a fair investigation of this case by the CBI and Central Vigilance. He said that this is a direct robbery of poor and needy patients and this is tarnishing the image of a prestigious hospital like PGI.
The PGI administration has taken the matter seriously and preparations are being made to send notices to the accused. The administration says that if the shopkeepers’ reply is not satisfactory, an investigation committee will be formed and strict action will be taken. Officials made it clear that no one inside PGI will be allowed to cheat patients.
Different MRP on 2 similar medicines
PGI Medical Technologist Association (PGIMTA) has stated in its complaint that the same medicine has different MRP written on it in two different shops – Rs. 300 and Rs. 450. Whereas the batch number, manufacturing date and manufacturing company of both the medicines are the same. This makes it clear that more money has been charged from the patients by deliberately showing difference in MRP.
Association general secretary Ashwani Munjal alleged that patients are being looted in connivance with chemists and the PGI administration. He said that chemist shops in the PGI campus are given monthly rents of Rs 30 to 70 lakh, due to which shopkeepers are manipulating the MRP to cover their losses.
