Probe on in Shubhkaran Death Case; Committee led by former judge to record statements of injured farmers

Chandigarh: The committee led by former judge Jaishree Thakur will record the statements of farmers at Kisan Bhawan on Monday in the case of the death of Shubhakaran Singh who died in the violence that took place during the farmers’ movement on the Punjab-Haryana border.

The committee was formed on March 7 after the Punjab and Haryana High Court heard the PIL filed by Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa. On 27 February 2024, a PIL was filed by former Punjab Advocate General APS Deol on behalf of Bajwa. The first hearing was held on 29 February.

The committee visited the clash site on April 18 and later asked witnesses to present evidence and record statements. However, farmers were afraid of going to Narwana PWD Guest House as the Haryana government had registered a case against unknown persons and they could be arrested.

Bajwa, through his lawyer Himmat Singh Deol, requested the committee to record the statements of the farmers at a place outside Haryana. The Committee accepted the request and scheduled the hearing of witnesses on 6 May at 2:30 pm at Kisan Bhawan, Chandigarh.

Bajwa said the committee has asked the 30 injured farmers to record their statements and they can present evidence such as tear gas shells, bullets, and empty cartridges of different bores.

At the same time, Bajwa said that Punjab, Haryana and Central government are in collusion as no FIR was registered a day before he filed the petition.
