Chandigarh: Bollywood actor and BJP MP from Mandi, Himachal, Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency has been released in theaters today. Sikh organizations have come out in protest against it. Sikh organizations have started protesting outside PVR cinemas in Amritsar and Mohali. At present, the film is not being shown anywhere.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has accused the film of distorting facts and hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community.
SGPC chief had demanded a ban
SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami had written a letter to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann on Thursday (January 17) regarding this film. He had demanded that ‘Emergency’ should be banned in Punjab. Dhami had said that the way the Sikh community and their struggle during the 1975 Emergency has been shown in the film does not match historical facts and misrepresents the image of Sikhs.
Dhami also alleged that the Sikhs have been shown in a negative light in the film, ignoring their sacrifices and historical contributions. He had appealed to the government to respect the sentiments of the Sikh community and stop the release of this film in Punjab.
Kangana Ranaut has responded
Kangana Ranaut had rejected these allegations and said that no derogatory statement has been made towards the Sikh community in her film. She said that Emergency is based on historical facts and an attempt has been made to show the truth during the Emergency imposed in the country under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Banned in Bangladesh
The first released trailer of the film showed the period of terrorism in Punjab as well as the period of Bangladesh independence. Due to which this film has been banned in Bangladesh. In the newly released trailer, no scenes related to terrorism, Blue Star Operation and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala were shown.
Aman Arora said- The decision to ban the film will be taken by the Chief Minister.
There has been no official statement from the Punjab government on this issue so far. However, Aam Aadmi Party state president Aman Arora said that no work that harms the peace of Punjab will be allowed. The decision to ban the film has to be taken by the Chief Minister.
