Punjab: Doctors called off strike after assurance from SC, OPD and other facilities to be restored

Chandigarh: The 11-day strike in Punjab in protest against the rape and murder of a female doctor on the night of August 9 at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has ended today. The strike has been called off after the assurance of the Supreme Court. The doctors have returned to their work today after deliberations but they will continue their strike.

Today, i.e. on Friday, OPD and other facilities have been restored like normal days in PGI Chandigarh, Patiala, and Amritsar Government Medical College. During this time all the doctors will give their services while wearing black bands and express their anger at the same time.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) said on Thursday that the doctors should return to work. He knows the condition of the hospitals. He himself has slept on the floor of a government hospital when a member of his family was ill.

The CJI has asked the state governments to make proper security arrangements for the doctors. Along with this, the Union Health Ministry was directed to ensure the safety of the doctors in collaboration with the Chief Secretaries and DGPs of the states. This exercise has been asked to be completed in 1 week. The state will implement it within 2 weeks.

Resident Doctors Association Amritsar Medical College Executive Secretary Dr. Samarth Gupta said that after the assurance of the Supreme Court, the doctors ended the strike and returned to their work. From today, Friday, OPD and all other facilities will run like normal days. Earlier, patients were being seen only in emergency. OPD and other facilities were stopped.
