Punjab-Haryana Water dispute: HC reserves verdict

Chandigarh, May 26: The hearing in the Punjab-Haryana water dispute was held in the High Court today. After hearing the arguments of the BBMB and the Central Government, along with the Punjab and Haryana governments, the court has reserved its verdict in the matter.

During the hearing of the case, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) was the first to present its case, arguing that in its petition, it had demanded that the Punjab government and the police not interfere in its work. The High Court had also given orders for this, but despite the High Court’s orders, the Punjab government interfered in its work.

What position did the Centre take?

Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain, representing the central government, said that the Punjab government did not comply with the High Court orders of May 6.

Haryana defended itself.

In the High Court, Haryana Advocate General Pravendra Singh Chauhan said, Haryana has never asked for a share of water from Punjab. Punjab has also been taking more water than its share for the last 20 years. BBMB decides who gets how much water, not Punjab or Haryana. On the deployment of police in Bhakra, the Punjab government had told the High Court that this deployment has been done for the security of Bhakra. If the police has been deployed for the security of Bhakra, then what were the government ministers doing there?

What did the Punjab government say?

While defending itself in the High Court, the Punjab government again raised the issue of the meeting on May 2. The Punjab government said that no decision was taken in this meeting in which water was asked to be released. This information has come to light only through a press note.

After hearing all the arguments, the High Court reserved the decision.
