Punjab Lok Sabha election: Election Commission accepts nomination form of Waris Punjab De Chief Amritpal Singh

New Delhi: In a major development, The Election Commission of India (ECI) has accepted the nomination of pro-Khalistani supporter and Waris Punjab De Chief Amritpal Singh. Amritpal Singh has filed nomination to contest election from Khadoor Sahib seat. Khadoor Sahib seat is also known as Panthic seat which is strong hold of Shiromani Akali Dal.

As per the election commission, the nomination of Amritpal Singh was filed on May 10. Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail Assam. He will be contesting election from jail.

Amritpal had filed plea in High Court seeking bail to campaign during the election which however was not accepted. Elections on all 13 seats of Punjab will be held on June 1.

Earlier in April this year, Singh’s mother claimed that the pro-Khalistani leader had “pressure” to contest the polls. At that time, his mother made it clear that he would not contest the election on the ticket of any party.

Amritpal Singh arrested by Punjab Police

The pro-Khalistani leader was arrested by Punjab police in April last year, weeks after evading police for over a month and the stringent National Security Act was invoked against him. He and nine of his associates are currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail.
